Polonaruwa Ancient City

The ancient city of Polonnaruwa became the second capital of what we now know as Sri Lanka after the Cholas had plundered the former capital of Anuradhapura. For over three centuries, Polonnaruwa was a royal capital and thriving commercial centre before being abandoned in the early 13th century. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa became a UNESCO World Heritage listed site in 1982. Polonnaruwa ancient city contains monuments standing evidence to a historically dynamic period of Sri Lanka’s pre-modern socio-cultural and political domain reflecting a complex ethnic and religious amalgamation. The diversity of existing ruined buildings at Polonnaruwa has been regarded as a manifestation of that interactive historical period. Polonnaruwa is another one of those cities where it is amazing to observe how the past blends with the present. Times have changed but faith will always remain. Worshippers still leave offerings for those centuries old Budhha stupas situated around the city.
