Kandy
The World Heritage City of Kandy is situated in the central highlands at an average altitude of 480 meters above sea level, 129 km from Colombo and is best known as the last capital of the kings of Sri Lanka from 17th to the 19th Centuries. It is generally recognized as the country’s cultural capital. Kandy is the home of the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world. It was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988. The city has many shrines and temples in and around Kandy, where you will see rare paintings, frescoes, wood and stone carvings. Kandy Perahera (procession) is one of the world’s most famous public parades. This annual parade of dancers, acrobats, jugglers, drummers, singers, elephants and the sacred relic of the Buddha’s tooth attracts thousands of tourists to Kandy.
