Since its inception in 1975, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is one of the most popular excursions and tourist destinations in the country. Situated halfways between the modern commercial capital Colombo and ancient hill country capital Kandy, the Pinnawala elephant orphanage is not only an orphanage but also a nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants offering its visitors the views of the largest number of pachyderms that could be seen in a single place. The orphanage has two main attractions, the feeding to baby elephants and the bathing of elephants.
